Requirements to Become A Squad Technician
Squad Truck Technician
The Squad Truck Technician (STT) is the entry level for the Squad Truck Operations Program (STOP). The STT program is designed to take an individual who has the minimum certifications & training to make him/her a proficient and productive member of the vehicle rescue team. STT’s have the knowledge, skills and abilities to operate all vehicle extrication equipment that is carried on CARS squad trucks with a high degree of proficiency. CARS members who have successfully completed the STT program will be designated a Squad Truck Technician. Any individual that meets the following prerequisites may apply for the STT program:
Beginning Training Requirements:
- Be at least 21 years of age.
- Be a member of CARS.
- Be a released attendant-in-charge (AIC).
- Be a released ambulance driver.
- Have completed the VEHEXT program.
- Have certification in Hazardous Materials Awareness.
- Have approval in writing from your Crew Captain and the Vehicle Rescue Captain
Once you have received the appropriate approvals, you will be assigned a preceptor by the Vehicle Rescue Captain. The training and certification process to become a Squad Technician involve completing the following steps in order:
Procedure:
- Obtain a copy of the STOP manual.
- Contact the Vehicle Rescue Captain with your desire to enter the program.
- Pick a preceptor. This can be any Senior Rescue Technician.
- Meet with the preceptor and map out a plan of action to complete the require steps in the required time frame.
Training Steps:
- Completion of appropriate checklists.
- Passing the written examination for Squad Technician with a score of at least 80% before practical examination.
- Passing the timed practical evolution list as determined by the preceptor.
