RECERTIFICATION INFORMATION


Often, we receive requests for information regarding recertification requirements of Virginia EMT's. Hopefully we have gathered everything you need to know regarding the CEU program and the recert requirements for each level of EMT. If something is missing, let us know!

Effective May 1, 1997, the Office of EMS implemented several changes in the recertification process for all levels of EMS providers in Virginia:

Effective May 1, 1997

(After completion of a raining course or continuing education program.)

FULL TESTING: ALS (State Written and In-course Practical), BLS (State Written and Practical)

RECERT TESTING: ALS & BLS (State Written only)


Continuing Education Unit (CEU) Requirements

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN - BASIC

If your current Emergency Medical Technician certification expires AFTER JULY 1, 1998, you must meet these requirements by your expiration date to recertify. At that time you will be issued a new 4-year certification.

Airway Management with practical3 hours
Patient Assessment3 hours
Medical Emergencies with scenarios4 hours
Automated External Defibrillation with practical2 hours
Trauma Emergencies with scenarios4 hours

CATEGORY II - OTHER

Total Category II (up to 12 hours)

CATEGORY III - MULTIMEDIA

Multimedia (obtain up to 10 hours)

CATEGORY II & III COMBINED MUST = 12 HOURS
TOTAL EMT-B RECERTIFICATION 36 HOURS



EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN - SHOCK TRAUMA

If your current Shock-Trauma Technician certification expires AFTER JULY 1, 1998, you must meet these requirements by your expiration date to recertify. At that time you will be issued a new 3-year certification.

If your current Cardiac Technician certification expires AFTER JULY 1, 1998, you must meet these requirements by your expiration date to recertify. At that time you will be issued a new 3-year certification.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN - PARAMEDIC

If your current Paramedic certification expires AFTER JULY 1, 1998, you must meet these requirements by your expiration date to recertify. At that time you will be issued a new 3-year certification.

These requirements directly match NREMT-P recert hours.
