RECERTIFICATION INFORMATION
Effective May 1, 1997, the Office of EMS implemented several changes in the recertification process for all levels of EMS providers in Virginia:
2. Upon completion of required continuing education (CE), recertification testing at all EMS provider levels will now require only the successful completion of a state written examination. (State administered practical examinations will no longer be required for BLS providers.)
3. The Operational Medical Directors (OMDs) of licensed EMS agencies will be authorized to exempt qualified agency members from the requirement to take the state written recertification examination. THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE NOT AFFILIATED WITH AN EMS AGENCY.
(After completion of a raining course or continuing education program.)
FULL TESTING:1. Advanced Life Support providers are no longer required to be affiliated with a licensed EMS agency to achieve or retain state EMS certification at these levels: EMT-Shock-Trauma, EMT-Cardiac and EMT-Paramedic. (However, practice of all invasive procedures will still be allowed only under the supervision of a licensed physician.)
Virginia EMS Certification Testing
Who Has To Test and When
Effective May 1, 1997
Everyone completing a course for a higher level than currently held.
Everyone in Re-entry attempting to regain certification after expiration at a previous level. (Applies to all levels.)
Everyone who was certified for one-year or less through Legal Recognition of an out of state or NREMT-Basic card.
They are actively affiliated with an EMS agency that is licensed at their level,
AND, they receive an OMD Exemption from the exam after meeting any OMD/Agency criteria. (i.e.: Agency tests, calls runs, etc.)
AND a completed VIRGINIA EMS CERTIFICATION APPLICATION has been signed by the Agency OMD and submitted to the state Office of EMS.

Q. Can I get category I credit for an ALS class if I'm a BLS provider?
Q. What are the magazine course and topic numbers. Can I get category I credits?
Next two digits - month of magazine issue which the article appears: 03 (March)
Next two digits are the year of the magazine issue: 97
Always use topic code 00260
- Category I - credits are NOT available for this method
- Category IV - BLS providers using magazine articles
- Category V - ALS providers using magazine articles
Q. What date do I use when using a video or magazine article?
Another reason could be due to an invalid topic or course number.
Still another reason might be an incorrect SSN. If the SSN was bubbled incorrectly it has no file to go to. It must match the SSN in a file.
