PM STUDENT PRECPTION
Purpose: To define the scop of practice for paramedic students and preceptors.
I. Affiliation
A. Field preception may only occur in the presence of an agreement between the teaching facility and the Clinical Review and Training Committee.
B. The following are eligible to precept at the Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad (CARS):
i. Any student enrolled in the paramedic program as defined in section I.A.
ii. Students with the aproval of the course director for the program in section I.A.
II. Preceptors
A. Preceptors must meet the following criteria:
i. Virginia registered Paramedic.
ii. Preferred time duration of at least 3 years since initial Paramedic certification.
1. This may be decreased at the direction of the course Operational Medical Director.
iii. Approval of the CRAT Committee.
iv. Approval of the course Medical Director.
III. Procedures
A. Precepted shifts must be scheduled in adnavce with the preceptor and with the course director.
i. No more than one student will be assigned to a preceptor for a given shift.
B. The student will remain on an ambulance with the designated preceptor for the duration of the shift.
C. Calls which occur outside of pre-planned, designated shifts will not count as precepted team Leader hours.
i. The student may only collect skills on a level at which he/she is released at CARS.
D. Individual skills may be performed in the presence of an approved preceptor, but these skills may not be performed unless the student completes the call in its entirety.
E. Practice during precepted shifts will be under the direction of the course Medical Director.
F. Skills are limited to those defined by the course director.
